Q: Why is it necessary that I take a Nursing Informatics course in my Master’s
program?
A: It is necessary to understand the role of health information technology as it relates to
nursing professional practice. As a masters-prepared nurse, students must also
understand the ‘why’ behind many everyday tasks, how technology can drive quality, and
the necessary members that make up a successful team and project.
Q: I am not tech savvy and this is not my area of expertise or interest. How can I
succeed in this course?
A: Informatics expertise is not necessary for success, achieving competency in the subject
matter is. Success can be obtained through this foundational course of study and
application of real-word experience using health information systems (HIS). You will have
the opportunity to leverage that experience in the performance assessment.
Q: What is the overall objective of this course and the performance assessment?
A: The objective is to place yourself in the role of a nursing informatics specialist tasked with
building a small project team to implement a HIS. You will be identifying the impact of a
HIS on healthcare delivery and quality care as well as gain an understanding of the
federal regulations driving the technology, pertinent members and roles of a project team,
and how to determine success of a HIS implementation.
Q: Can the Tasks be submitted separately?
A. Yes, each task can be submitted separately and are graded independently. They do not
need to be submitted together.

o Create an outline for
Task 1 using rubric
headers as Level 1
headers in your paper.
o General APA
Template
o Schedule a 30-minute
introductory 1:1 call with
Course Instructor.
Q: Should the paper be written in first person?
A: Unless you are specifically referencing research you have conducted yourself you should
stay in the third person when writing in APA style.
Q: What is the suggested length for the Task 1 paper?
A: There is no specific page requirement for the paper. You have enough information once
you can confidently say that you have addressed each rubric item. The best way to know
this is to compare your work against the “competent” column of the rubric to make sure
you have addressed each criteria.
Q: How can my Course Instructor assist me?
A: Your Course Instructor can help you with interpretation of the rubric criteria and
application of the course concepts. Each CI is experienced in the Nursing Informatics field
and can offer insight into the role of Nursing Informatics specialist.

The tasks:
Task 1: Scholarly Paper = at least 10 – 13 pages
Task 2: Multimedia Presentation = 10 – 15 slides
Process both tasks as a 14 pages order. We treat every slide as half a page
Task 1: Scholarly Paper
Introduction:
Current and emerging technologies in healthcare provide nurses with the opportunity to improve patient outcomes through ever-increasing access to data and evidence. Information support systems affect decisions made at both the point of care and the organizational levels. Nurses who are prepared at the master’s level fill a key role in leading unit and organizational change that incorporates these emerging technologies to promote patient safety and enhance quality of care.
Scenario:
You are an informatics nurse specialist working in a healthcare organization that is merging with another organization of comparable size. As a result of the merger, funds have been designated to offer services in a satellite facility. You are responsible to lead the project committee in implementing a health information system (HIS) that meets current HITECH and HIPAA Security and Privacy regulatory requirements.
Requirements:
Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. Use the Turnitin Originality Report available in Taskstream as a guide for this measure of originality.
Professional Communications is a required aspect to pass this task. Completion of a spell check and grammar check prior to submitting your final work is strongly recommended.
You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.
A. Discuss and analyze health information systems by doing the following:
1. Summarize advantages and disadvantages of a system (general, not a specific system), including the following:
• usability
• interoperability
• scalability
• compatibility
At a minimum you must list at least one advantage and disadvantage each.
Example. : The intro to your paper could consist of section A where you would discuss in general some advantages (ex: real time access to the patients chart) and disadvantages (ex: cost) of a health information system. Then you could write separate paragraphs on each of the bulleted terms below and provide an advantage and a disadvantage of each term. Let the evaluators know that you know what each term means as it relates to a health information system. · Usability: ease of use for the clinicians ex: advantage – quick templates for charting with drop down boxes · Interoperability: how well the health information system works with other applications ex: advantage – if the blood banks application is interfaced with the HIS then the data would flow easily into the patients chart decreasing the risk of transcription error. · Scalability: how well the health information system is going to meet future needs ex: if your facility needs to add a geri psych unit, is your health information system going to provide
2. Describe how a system will affect patient care and documentation.
3. Explain how using a system to access information will affect the quality and delivery of nursing care and patient outcomes.
B. Discuss how a system will benefit the organization by addressing the following:
1. Provide two ways that quality improvement (QI) data collected from a system can lead to measurable improvement in health care services and the health status of targeted patient groups.
2. Explain how a system will meet HITECH and HIPAA security standards and regulations, including the following:
• data storage integrity
• data backup and recovery
3. Explain how a system will protect patient privacy.
4. Describe how adopting a system will improve organizational efficiency and productivity by addressing the following factors to the organization, including the following:
• standardizing documentation
• reducing waste
• increasing productivity
• human and capital resource
C. Describe four essential stakeholder roles needed to form an interdisciplinary team to work on a system implementation, including the following:
• each team member’s title in the organization
• each team member’s role in the implementation of the health information system
• each team member’s expertise and how it contributes to the success of the project
Examples. CIO, CEO, CFO, IT Educators….
D. Discuss your plan for evaluating the success of the implementation of a system by incorporating two professional organization standards. *Use ANA and ANI’s standards.
Example: Task 1 Section D:Your facility or committee is evaluating success of the implementation of a health information system and it will be based on 2 professional organization standards. If you are evaluating success of an implementation then you might consider something big such as no data breaches or no breach in patient privacy etc. Many professional organization standards such as ANA, ANIA, HIMSS etc. have professional standards or statements that define success of health information systems or electronic health record system implementations. For the examples above you might suggest to the team that your facility align their standards by requiring all users to access the system with a secure login and password to prevent any breaches of data and to maintain patient privacy.By doing this you could put a plan in place to evaluate success of the implementation by utilizing and aligning standards with a professional organization.Example: the project committee plans to evaluate success of implementing a health.
E. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.
